The Spice Girls were interviewed by MTV in March 1998
Here's what went down!
"The Spice Girls: love 'em or hate 'em, you just can't stop looking at 'em"
MTV NEWS: When do you hit the road?
SPORTY: We didn't stop, really. We've been doing promotional tours for the last two years. But the Spiceworld Tour kicked off in Dublin-- what was the date? The end of February, wasn't it? The 23rd?
BABY: And we were hiding, rehearsing in Dublin for a little while.
SCARY: We only had about three weeks of rehearsals to get the whole show together. We're workaholics!
MTV NEWS: How do you keep going after being on the road for two years?
BABY: We're young.
SCARY: We have a party every night, that's how we get going.
SPORTY: I think it's because we love what we're doing so much. It's our thing, our music, and so our hearts are just in it 100% and that keeps you going.
SCARY: You get on a roll.
BABY: When you enjoy doing something so much, it doesn't really seem like work.
MTV NEWS: When are you coming to the States?
SCARY: For two months!
SPORTY: We're there from June the 10th in Miami to the 31st of August.
BABY: We can't wait. I think because we've been over to America and we've really enjoyed it. All our fans are so open. Everything's a little bit larger over there. I think they'll enjoy the shop. I think they'll appreciate it.
GINGER: We're covering the whole of America. We were in the States in January with "Spiceworld" and we were in Chicago with Oprah.
BABY: I had my 22nd birthday there! And I'd like to say this on camera: Leonardo DiCaprio, if you're out there, come and see the show.
SCARY: But only if you're a fan. You have to know all the words!
BABY: And you have to come on your own!
THE SPICE GIRLS ON PERFORMING....
MTV NEWS: Which is your favorite song to perform live?
SPORTY: Oh, that's a tough one because they're all so different.
SCARY: I like "Do It" because we've got the boys, ok?
BABY: I like "Two Becomes One." It's probably my hardest song, but it's nice to be able to let it rip, really sing.
GINGER: I think "Denying" because it's so theatrical. We all get in little characters. We're really into making it entertaining, so each song has a little story in it...
SCARY: A theme.
GINGER: ...and that one has, like, a seedy club scene.
POSH: I think I like "If You Can't Dance" because it's the first song that we do and it's like when the doors open and everyone's screaming. It's a really good vibe because it's the first time you see the audience, and it's very strong, I like it.
SCARY: In general, this is something that we've all been waiting to do for such a long time, it's what it's all about. We're up there, we've got all of our fans there. It's an amazing feeling, you can't describe it. We're so glad to do this, we think we're really, really lucky. The reponse wherever we go has been brilliant.
BABY: The Spice boys say "Girl Power!"
SCARY: Some of the boy fans, because you know we have the Spice boys, they're like "No! No! Don't touch her!"
BABY: They get really angry when we're dancing with another man.
SCARY: It is quite funny.
GINGER: And it's good for the ego.
THE SPICE GIRLS ON GETTING TIME OFF WORK...
MTV NEWS: When was your last day off?
SCARY: Day off? What's that?
SPORTY: No, we did have a day off the other day. But our days off consist of traveling to the next town.
POSH: The thing is, now that we're looking after a lot of things ourselves, the schedule that we do is our schedule. So if we feel that we need a day off, we do that.
SCARY: You just cancel.
MTV NEWS: What do you do on days off?
ALL: Shop!
SPORTY: Or sleep, go out to dinner...
MTV NEWS: Do you go to fashion shows?
ALL: No.
GINGER: We were going to go to Versace...
SCARY: I tell you what I think. It's really great and everything, but can you imagine sitting there for over an hour? I mean, your bum's going to get stiff, you're watching people go up and down. I'd rather be out with my mates chatting.
THE SPICE GIRLS ON "SPICE WORLD"
MTV NEWS: Were you all happy with the success of "Spiceworld"?
ALL: Yes!
POSH: I think we were really surprised because a lot of people wanted to criticize us, and at the end of the day, we just did that film, we had a laugh with it and we're really proud of it. For people to take it on board and think it's funny is a huge compliment for us. Because it's the first real acting we've done.
MTV NEWS: How do you plan a wedding when you're touring?
POSH: Oh, it's easy. Just get a co-ordinator.
BABY: Get your mom to do it. The ring's huge!
MTV NEWS: Will there be a "Spiceworld II"?
POSH: We're not sure yet.
SPORTY: We couldn't get the same cast. Those Spice Girls are just too busy.
MTV NEWS: Would you give Kurt Loder a cameo?
SPORTY: No! Because he always says horrible things about us! It's only becasue we make him howl like a dog. Remember the karaoke bar!?
THE SPICE GIRLS TALKING ABOUR MADONNA........
MTV NEWS: I just wanted to show you this issue of SPIN...
GINGER: Madonna says, "I like the Spice Girls. Every time someone says something bad about them, I say 'Hey, wait a minute, I was a Spice Girl once." Madonna...
ALL: We love you!
SPORTY: Madonna was a Spice Girl once! Madonna has always and will always be a Spice Girl! Now she's a mom...Girl Power!
GINGER: We've met Madonna and we've got so much respect for her. I mean, she's still going. She is Girl Power. Control of her own destiny.
SPORTY: I want to work with her. Think she might like that?
